On 30 September, Open USD (OUSD), a dollar stablecoin run by a company called Open Standard and backed by Stripe, Visa, Mastercard, Coinbase and Shopify, started trading on four blockchains. The same week, at Sibos in Miami, Swift CEO Javier Pérez-Tasso confirmed that Swift’s blockchain-based ledger for bank tokenised deposits was live.

One is a stablecoin built by payments and technology companies. The other is the banking system’s own answer, keeping dollars inside regulated banks. This article explains what OUSD actually is, what changed between its announcement and its launch, how it compares with USDT and USDC, and where Swift’s ledger fits in the race to settle dollars across borders.

1. Why Open USD Matters Now

The stablecoin market has grown to about $314 billion in supply, and two issuers dominate it: Tether’s USDT at about $184 billion and Circle’s USDC at about $74 billion, according to DefiLlama data on 6 October 2026. Every serious newcomer has struggled to dent that duopoly, because stablecoins live or die on liquidity and distribution.

OUSD is different in one respect that matters: its founding partners already own enormous merchant and card distribution. If even a fraction of Stripe, Visa and Mastercard payment flows settle in OUSD, it could grow quickly. If those partners stay lukewarm, it becomes one more well-funded stablecoin that never escapes its launch week. For a holder, the real risks are issuer, reserve, custody and regulation, not price swings.

Key Numbers at a Glance

Metric

Value

OUSD circulating supply

About $700 million

OUSD reserve mix

13.3% cash, 86.7% money market funds holding short-dated T-bills

OUSD issuer

Bridge, a Stripe company

OUSD network operator

Open Standard

OUSD chains

Ethereum, Base, Solana, Tempo

Business mint and redeem fee

None, no volume caps

USDT supply

About $184.2 billion

USDC supply

About $74.3 billion

Total USD stablecoin supply

About $314 billion

Swift ledger banks

17 today, at least 19 expected by end of 2026

Data as of 6 October 2026 (Bridge OUSD reserves page, DefiLlama, Swift statements reported at Sibos 2026). Each token is meant to be redeemable for one dollar, and it is backed by cash and short-dated government debt held in reserve. Two companies share the work: Bridge, the stablecoin infrastructure company Stripe owns, is the legal issuer, while Open Standard, an independent company led by Bridge co-founder Zach Abrams, runs the network and its partner programme.

The founding partners are Coinbase, Mastercard, Shopify, Stripe and Visa. Stripe has said OUSD will be the default stablecoin for businesses on its platform, which is the single most important distribution commitment behind the project.

Type: fiat-backed dollar stablecoin, centrally issued

Issuer: Bridge (Stripe)

Operator and governance: Open Standard, with a board drawn from partner businesses

Chains at launch: Ethereum, Base, Solana and Tempo, Stripe’s own blockchain

Who can mint: businesses, through partner platforms, at 1:1 with no fees

Who cannot: individuals, who buy and sell OUSD on exchanges instead

Not the OUSD on your price tracker

The ticker causes real confusion. A much older and unrelated token, Origin Dollar, also trades as OUSD. It is a small yield-bearing DeFi stablecoin with roughly $6 million in supply on DefiLlama, and it has nothing to do with Open Standard. Anyone looking up OUSD should check the contract address against Open Standard’s own published addresses before buying or sending anything.

3. From Announcement to Launch: What Changed

Open Standard unveiled Open USD on 30 June 2026 with a list of more than 140 partner companies. Names on that list included BlackRock, BNY, DBS, Standard Chartered, BBVA, Google, American Express, Shopify, Aave and MetaMask, alongside the five founders. The pitch was simple: free minting and redemption for businesses, no volume caps, and most of the interest earned on reserves shared back with partners after a management fee.

The market took it seriously. Circle’s shares fell by roughly 15% to 18% in the session after the announcement, depending on the measure, because the revenue-sharing model attacks the way Circle earns money on USDC reserves. Analysts at Clear Street argued at the time that “without any solid evidence that OUSD can get real traction, the selloff looks overdone.” Our CRCL stock analysis covers why reserve income is so central to Circle’s business.

Three months later, the project went from promise to product:

24 September: founding partners committed more than $1 billion in near-term launch liquidity

30 September: OUSD launched natively on Ethereum, Base, Solana and Tempo

1 October: Coinbase opened business minting and redemption

6 October: circulating supply stood at about $700 million, below the $1 billion headline

That last point matters. The $1 billion figure was a commitment, not a mint, and early supply is a fraction of USDC’s, let alone USDT’s.

The 140-partner claim, examined

The partner list deserves scrutiny. In early July, South Korean outlet Chosun Biz reported that several Korean firms named as partners, including Samsung Electronics, Shinhan Financial Group, Dunamu and K-Bank, said they had only been approached or had agreed to review the project. Samsung said there had been no official consultations. The core founders are real and committed, but a name on a launch slide is not the same as a signed role, and readers should weigh the list accordingly.

4. How OUSD Works: Reserves, Redemption and Revenue

OUSD’s value rests on its reserves. Bridge publishes a reserves page, and on 6 October 2026 it showed about $709 million of reserves against the tokens in circulation: about $94 million in cash (13.3%) and about $615 million (86.7%) in money market funds holding Treasury bills with maturities under three months. The reserves are held with BlackRock, BNY and Lead Bank, and Bridge has committed to monthly attestations.

OUSD reserves sit mostly in money market funds holding short-dated Treasury bills, plus cash.

The economics are where OUSD breaks from its rivals. Tether and Circle keep most of the interest earned on their reserves. Open Standard instead passes most of that reserve income to the partner businesses that create supply and drive transactions, keeping a management fee it has not disclosed in detail.

Value accrual: there is no separate governance or utility token; reserve income flows to partners, not to ordinary holders

Supply mechanics: supply expands when businesses mint and shrinks when they redeem, so there is no emission schedule or unlock risk

Redemption: 1:1 for businesses through founding partner platforms, including Stripe and Coinbase

Holder exposure: retail holders rely on Bridge as issuer, on the custodians, and on exchange liquidity to exit

For a refresher on how fiat-backed stablecoins hold their peg in general, see our introduction to stablecoins.

5. Is OUSD a Real Challenger to USDT and USDC?

On distribution, OUSD has a better starting position than almost any stablecoin before it. On liquidity and usage, it is starting from close to zero. The two incumbents have also specialised in different directions, which shapes where OUSD can realistically compete.

Dune’s Digital Asset Brief found that USDT settled about $95 billion of identified commercial payments in the first half of 2026, against about $14 billion for USDC, while USDC dominated DeFi and trading flows on Base and Ethereum. USDT owns payments in emerging markets; USDC owns regulated, onchain finance. OUSD’s natural target is the gap between them: merchant and business payments in markets where Stripe, Visa and Mastercard already sit in the checkout.

Where OUSD can win: business payments routed through partners who are paid to push it

Where it is weakest: exchange liquidity, DeFi integrations and emerging-market retail, where USDT’s network effect is deep

The Circle problem: the revenue-share model directly undercuts USDC’s business proposition to large partners

Our piece on S&P Global’s downgrade of USDT shows why reserve quality is the first thing to check on any stablecoin, including a new one.

6. Swift’s Shared Ledger: The Banks’ Own Answer

While payments companies built OUSD, the banks built something else. Swift, the messaging cooperative founded in 1973 that connects more than 11,000 financial institutions, announced at Sibos 2025 in Frankfurt that it would add a blockchain-based ledger to its infrastructure, working with Consensys. The ledger runs on Hyperledger Besu, an Ethereum-compatible platform built for permissioned networks.

The ledger opened for initial use in July 2026 with 17 banks across six continents, including Citi, HSBC, BNP Paribas, BNY, Standard Chartered, DBS, UBS, MUFG and Wells Fargo. On 10 September, DBS, OCBC and UOB completed Singapore’s first live interbank transactions in tokenised Singapore dollar deposits on it. At Sibos 2026 in Miami, which ran from 28 September to 1 October, Pérez-Tasso said the ledger is live and that at least 19 banks are expected to use it by the end of the year, across five major currencies.

Swift’s ledger lets participating banks move tokenised deposits around the clock.

The design is deliberately conservative. Banks keep their customers, deposits and compliance on their own systems; the ledger records and synchronises payment obligations between them, so tokenised deposits can move 24 hours a day, including weekends. It is built for bank-issued tokenised deposits, not for public stablecoins. We first looked at this shift in Swift’s move into blockchain.

7. Stablecoins vs Tokenised Deposits

The two models answer the same question, how to move dollars instantly across borders, in opposite ways. A stablecoin such as OUSD is a claim on a non-bank issuer and its reserve pool, and it can circulate on public blockchains to anyone. A tokenised deposit is still a bank deposit, a liability of a regulated bank, just recorded in a form that can move on a shared ledger.

The Bank for International Settlements has come down firmly on the bank side. In its annual economic report it argued that stablecoins fall short as money on singleness, elasticity and integrity, and it proposed a “unified ledger” anchored in central bank money, holding tokenised reserves and tokenised commercial bank deposits, as the better foundation.

<table style="border-collapse:collapse;width:100%;border:1px />
One model moves dollars outside the banking system, the other keeps them inside it.

Where the banks sit on both sides

The most interesting detail is the overlap. DBS, Standard Chartered and BNY were all named on OUSD’s launch partner list, and all three also appear among the banks piloting Swift’s ledger. Large banks are not choosing one model; they are positioning for both. That suggests the realistic outcome is coexistence, with stablecoins serving open, internet-native payments and tokenised deposits serving bank-to-bank settlement.

8. Regulation: The GENIUS Act Clock

OUSD is a US-issued stablecoin, so the GENIUS Act, signed in July 2025, is its key regulatory framework. The Act takes effect on the earlier of 18 January 2027 or 120 days after regulators issue final implementing rules. The OCC, FDIC, Federal Reserve and Treasury all published proposed rules during 2026, but final rules were not in place by the July target, so the industry may reach the effective date with key details still unsettled.

Bridge received conditional OCC approval for a national trust bank charter on 12 February 2026. Final approval had not been announced at the time of writing, and that status is worth tracking because it determines how directly OUSD’s issuer is supervised. Our look at Meta’s GENIUS Act strategy explains how the law is reshaping who can issue dollars onchain.

9. Bull vs Bear Case

🐂 Bull Case

Stripe has made OUSD its default stablecoin, giving it built-in merchant distribution

Businesses can mint and redeem through founding partner platforms at no cost

Sharing reserve income gives partners a direct financial reason to push adoption

Reserves are transparent, short-dated and held at large regulated custodians

Launching on four chains at once avoids the slow single-chain start of earlier entrants

🐻 Bear Case

Supply of about $700 million is tiny next to USDT’s $184 billion and USDC’s $74 billion

Several firms on the launch list said they had not signed anything, which weakens the coalition story

The issuer’s national trust charter is still only conditionally approved

Tokenised deposits on Swift’s ledger give banks a regulated alternative that keeps money inside the banking system

GENIUS Act rules may still be incomplete when the law takes effect in January 2027

10. Outlook: Which Model Wins Cross-Border Dollar Settlement?

The honest answer is that they are not yet competing for the same customers. OUSD is aimed at businesses that already pay and get paid through Stripe, Visa, Mastercard and Coinbase, and its real test is whether those partners route meaningful volume through it over the next two or three quarters. Swift’s ledger is aimed at bank-to-bank settlement, and its test is whether more banks and currencies join beyond the pilot group.

What would strengthen the OUSD case: sustained supply growth well past the $1 billion commitment, and visible merchant payment volume on chain

What would weaken it: supply stalling near launch levels, or partners quietly defaulting back to USDC

What to watch on the bank side: the number of live banks and currencies on Swift’s ledger by year end

Follow OneMoreBitcoin on YouTube for regular crypto market updates.

FAQ

What is Open USD (OUSD)?

Open USD is a US dollar stablecoin issued by Bridge, a Stripe company, and run by Open Standard. It is backed by cash and money market funds holding short-dated Treasury bills, and it launched on Ethereum, Base, Solana and Tempo on 30 September 2026.

Is OUSD the same as Origin Dollar?

No. Origin Dollar is an older, unrelated DeFi token that also uses the OUSD ticker. Always check the contract address against Open Standard’s published addresses before buying or sending.

Can individuals mint or earn yield on OUSD?

No. Only businesses can mint and redeem OUSD directly, and the reserve income is shared with partner businesses, not ordinary holders. Individuals can buy and sell OUSD on supporting exchanges.

Is OUSD safer than USDT or USDC?

Its reserves are short-dated and published, but it is new, small and its issuer’s trust charter is only conditionally approved. Every fiat-backed stablecoin carries issuer, custody and regulatory risk, and none is a bank deposit.

Is Swift’s ledger connected to OUSD?

No official source links the two. Swift’s ledger carries bank tokenised deposits between participating banks, while OUSD is a stablecoin on public blockchains. Some banks, including DBS, Standard Chartered and BNY, appear in both projects.

Conclusion

Open USD matters because it is the first stablecoin launched with the payments industry’s biggest distributors already behind it, and because its revenue-sharing model directly challenges how Circle and Tether make money. Its biggest opportunity is Stripe’s default status and partner incentives; its biggest risk is that announced support never turns into real payment volume, while banks build their own 24/7 dollar rails on Swift’s ledger.

Watch two numbers: OUSD’s circulating supply and the count of live banks on Swift’s ledger. If both grow, the likely future is not one winner but two systems, open stablecoins for internet-native payments and tokenised deposits for bank settlement, operating side by side.

Disclaimer:

This article is for educational and informational purposes only.
