Revenue for the quarter ended 30 September was $28.05 billion, essentially flat year over year and in line with the LSEG consensus of $27.88 billion. Adjusted (non-GAAP) earnings per share were $0.48, ahead of the LSEG consensus of $0.43, while GAAP diluted EPS fell to $0.22 from $0.39 a year earlier.

Shares closed the regular session on 21 October at $386.47, up 3.4%, and were up more than 1.7% in extended trading after the release, according to Reuters. Even after that move, Reuters noted the stock was still down about 14% for the year.

The headline beat matters less than one line in the cash flow statement. After a negative $1.09 billion in Q2, free cash flow swung back to a positive $1.53 billion. That answers the question this quarter had to answer, at least for now: the car and energy business can still fund a heavy investment year. It also raises a new one, because Q3 capex came in well below Q2’s pace with a big full-year target still standing.

1. Stock-based compensation was $1.17 billion in the quarter, against $663 million a year earlier.

Cash is the better news. Operating cash flow was $6.26 billion and capital expenditures fell to $4.73 billion from $5.79 billion in Q2, leaving free cash flow of $1.53 billion. Cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments rose $1.9 billion to $45.4 billion. Part of the operating cash flow came from working capital: accounts payable and accrued liabilities added $3.99 billion and deferred revenue $1.26 billion, items that do not repeat every quarter.

Free cash flow returned to $1.5 billion as capex eased to $4.7 billion.

4. Guidance and Outlook

Tesla did not give numerical guidance in the Q3 update. Its Outlook section repeats familiar language: maximum utilisation of existing factories, a strong balance sheet, and an expectation that hardware profits will over time be joined by faster growth in AI, software and fleet-based profits.

The figure that matters is capex. On the Q2 call in July, CFO Vaibhav Taneja reaffirmed that 2026 capital expenditures would exceed $25 billion. The Q3 letter does not change that number. Capex for the first nine months totals $13.0 billion, which means Q4 would need roughly $12 billion of spending to reach the target.

If the $25 billion target holds, Q4 free cash flow is very likely to turn negative again.

If Q4 spending comes in far lower, the target was either too high or the projects are slipping. Neither reading is simply good news.

Taneja said on the Q2 call that Tesla had arranged debt facilities with capacity to borrow up to $30 billion, which gives the balance sheet room either way.

Volume guidance is also absent. Tesla says battery availability “continued to be the limiting factor in increasing auto volumes,” while it ended the quarter with “the largest backlog for our passenger vehicles in four years.”

5. What Management Said

At the time of writing, no transcript of the 21 October call could be accessed, so this section relies only on direct quotes from the shareholder letter rather than paraphrased call commentary.

On Robotaxi: “We started providing Robotaxi rides using Cybercabs on September 3 in Austin. Cumulative unsupervised Robotaxi miles grew eightfold quarter over quarter.”

On energy: “Energy storage is the fastest way to add power to the existing grid and is critical to data center uptime.”

On Optimus: “Optimus production began in Fremont on our high-volume lines.”

On the cost of the roadmap: “We continue to invest in the future through R&D and Capex spend across our businesses, including SI, robotics and energy.”

Tesla also reported nearly two million cumulative unsupervised Robotaxi miles by quarter end, FSD (Supervised) approvals in nine EU countries, volume production of the Tesla Semi in Nevada, and its 10 millionth vehicle produced and delivered.

Cumulative unsupervised Robotaxi miles reached nearly two million by the end of Q3.

6. What Changed in the Investment Thesis

Q2 raised a serious question: was the margin and cash trough a one-off, or a new baseline? Q3 points to a one-off, with conditions.

What Q3 confirmed:

The core business can still produce cash. Positive free cash flow after a negative quarter removes the most immediate worry.

Energy remains the profit anchor, with a 33% gross margin and a record backlog.

Recurring software revenue is real and growing, with FSD subscriptions up 67%.

What Q3 weakened or left open:

Operating margin of 2.6% is still thin. Operating expenses grew far faster than gross profit.

The cash rebound was helped by lower capex and working capital, not only by better margins.

Autonomy still has no revenue disclosure. Reuters reported that the Austin Cybercab fleet grew from fewer than 40 vehicles to more than 300 in about a month, but the letter gives no Robotaxi revenue, utilisation or fleet-wide unit economics.

Regulators are engaged. NHTSA issued a Special Order on 10 September with 21 requests asking Tesla to show how the Cybercab, which has no steering wheel or pedals, complies with federal safety standards.

The market reaction, a gain of under 2% after hours, looks proportionate in our view. The quarter repaired the cash story without proving the autonomy story. Investors should also keep the SpaceX link in mind: Tesla holds a SpaceX equity stake bought in Q1 2026, and on SpaceX’s own call on 20 October Elon Musk said both companies had formed special committees to consider a combination, calling it a “good idea.” We covered that call in our SpaceX Q3 2026 earnings analysis, and SpaceX’s own spending pattern in our Q2 capex review.

7. Valuation After the Print

At the 21 October close of $386.47 and 3,541 million diluted shares, Tesla’s market value is roughly $1.37 trillion. The multiples below are OneMoreStock calculations from Tesla’s reported figures.

Price to trailing revenue: about 13.2 times trailing twelve month revenue of $103.6 billion.

Price to trailing GAAP earnings: about 425 times trailing GAAP diluted EPS of $0.91.

Price to trailing adjusted earnings: about 225 times trailing adjusted EPS of $1.72.

Trailing free cash flow yield: about 0.24%, on trailing free cash flow of $3.3 billion.

Analyst targets: an average target of $397.83 across 44 analysts, per MarketScreener on 22 October 2026.

No conventional automaker trades anywhere near these multiples. The price is paying for Robotaxi, Optimus and AI compute to become large, profitable businesses, which this quarter does not yet show in reported numbers. Valuation, not execution, remains the biggest risk for new money.

8. Bull Case vs Bear Case After the Results

🐂 Bull Case

Free cash flow turned positive at $1.53 billion, and cash and investments rose to $45.4 billion.

Automotive gross margin ex-credits recovered 180bp in one quarter, to 18.1%.

Energy delivered a 33% gross margin with a record order rate, and a 50 GWh Megafactory has started production.

FSD subscriptions of 1.74 million give Tesla a growing, high-margin software revenue stream.

Cybercab is in commercial service and Optimus production has started, which moves both from concept to operation.

🐻 Bear Case

Operating margin was only 2.6%, and operating expenses rose 39% year over year.

Hitting the more than $25 billion capex target implies about $12 billion of Q4 spending and likely another cash burn.

Regulatory credit revenue keeps shrinking, down to $113 million from $417 million a year earlier.

NHTSA’s Special Order on Cybercab certification is an unresolved regulatory risk for the autonomy roadmap.

At about 425 times trailing GAAP earnings, the shares leave little room for delays.

9. Final Thoughts

Tesla’s Q3 2026 earnings matter because they answered the cash question that Q2 raised. The biggest positive is the margin and free cash flow rebound, led by energy and services. The biggest concern is that operating profit is still thin, and the full-year capex target implies a much heavier Q4. The next dates to watch are Tesla’s Q4 production and delivery report in early January 2027 and the Q4 results that follow, where capex, free cash flow and any Robotaxi revenue disclosure will show whether this quarter was a turn or a pause.

For more stock analysis, subscribe to the OneMoreStock YouTube channel (@onemorestock). Tesla reported adjusted EPS of $0.48 against an LSEG consensus of $0.43. Revenue of $28.05 billion was in line with the LSEG consensus of $27.88 billion, and GAAP diluted EPS was $0.22.

How much revenue did Tesla make in Q3 2026?

Tesla reported total revenue of $28.05 billion for the quarter ended 30 September 2026, roughly flat from $28.10 billion a year earlier. Automotive contributed $20.56 billion, energy $2.88 billion, and services and other $4.61 billion.

Why did TSLA stock rise after earnings?

Shares rose more than 1.7% in extended trading on 21 October, per Reuters, after the adjusted EPS beat and a return to positive free cash flow of $1.53 billion. Margins also improved from Q2, easing fears that the Q2 trough would become the new normal.

What is Tesla’s capex guidance for 2026?

Tesla guided to more than $25 billion of capital expenditures for 2026 and did not change that figure in the Q3 update. With $13.0 billion spent in the first nine months, reaching the target would require about $12 billion in Q4.

How is Tesla’s Robotaxi business doing?

Tesla began Robotaxi rides using Cybercabs in Austin on 3 September 2026 and reported nearly two million cumulative unsupervised Robotaxi miles by quarter end. It does not yet disclose Robotaxi revenue or profitability.

Is TSLA a buy after earnings?

That depends on your time horizon and risk tolerance rather than on one quarter. The Q3 results improved the cash picture, but at about 425 times trailing GAAP earnings the price assumes autonomy and robotics succeed at scale, so long-term investors should weigh that against execution and regulatory risk.

When is Tesla’s next earnings date?

Tesla has not announced its Q4 2026 results date at the time of writing. The company usually publishes its quarterly production and delivery figures in the first days after a quarter ends, with full results a few weeks later.

Financial Disclaimer:

This article is for educational and informational purposes only and should not be considered financial or investment advice.
