How to Access Grok in 2026: Web, Mobile App and X

Grok is the AI assistant built by xAI, the AI company founded by Elon Musk. When it launched in late 2023 it was a closed beta, open only to invited users of X Premium+ in the US. That has changed completely. In 2026 anyone can use Grok for free, with paid plans for heavier use.

This guide covers the three ways to get into Grok, what the free tier gives you, when it makes sense to pay, and the privacy settings worth checking before you start.

Three ways to access Grok

1. On the web at grok.com

Go to grok.com.
Click Sign up. You can use an email address, or sign in with an existing X, Google or Apple account.
Type your question in the chat box. Your conversation history is saved in the sidebar.

The web version is the best choice for longer work such as drafting documents, uploading files for analysis or comparing answers side by side.

2. In the Grok mobile app

Search for “Grok” (published by xAI) in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Check the developer name, because there are copycat apps.
Install it and sign in with the same account you use on the web, so your chats sync.
Use the microphone button for voice conversations, or the camera to ask about something you’re looking at.

3. Inside X (formerly Twitter)

If you already use X, Grok is built into the X app and website. Open the Grok tab from the side menu or bottom bar. You can also tap the Grok icon on a post to get an explanation or background on it. This version is handy for questions about current events and what people are posting, because it can search X in real time.

What you get for free and what you pay for

The free tier covers general chat, writing help, image generation, voice mode and a limited number of live web and X searches. Free usage is capped, and the cap resets every few hours. Most casual users will rarely hit it.

Paid access comes in two forms. The SuperGrok plans (bought from grok.com/plans or in the app) raise the limits and unlock xAI’s most capable models and longer reasoning modes. X Premium subscriptions also include higher Grok limits inside X. The tiers and prices change often, so check the official plans page rather than any figure quoted in a blog post, including this one.

Paying is worth it if you:

hit the free limit regularly during a working day,
need the strongest reasoning model for coding, data or research work, or
rely on real-time search and want more of it.

If you mostly ask a few questions a day, stay on the free tier.

How Grok is different from other AI assistants

Real-time X data: Grok can search posts on X as they happen, so it reacts to breaking news faster than assistants that rely only on web search.
Personality: Grok’s default tone is more casual and humorous than most assistants. You can change it in settings or ask for a neutral tone.
Same accuracy problem as every chatbot: posts on X are not verified sources. Grok can repeat rumours or misread sarcasm, so check anything important against a primary source, especially news, health or financial information.

Privacy settings to check first

Depending on your account, region and where you use Grok, xAI may use your conversations, and on X your public posts and interactions with Grok, to improve its models. The defaults have changed more than once, so check the settings yourself:

On grok.com and the app: open Settings, go to the data section, and make sure the “Improve the model” option is set the way you want.
On X: go to Settings and privacy, then Privacy and safety, then Grok and third-party collaborators, and untick data sharing.
Private chat: use the private or incognito chat mode for anything sensitive. Even then, don’t paste passwords, ID numbers or confidential work documents into any AI chatbot.
